You must first determine if your inability to provide for another child will last for the foreseeable future or only for a short time? If you only need a few days or a couple of weeks to be in a position to parent your child, then a family member or close friend may be able to help you out. Additionally, you might find a local adoption agency that would assume temporary foster care of your child.

On the other hand, if you expect your situation to continue indefinitely, you need to explore a more permanent option for your soon-to-be-born or newborn baby. While a friend or family member may be willing to take care of your child for a long period of time, it is unlikely that they will readily relinquish custody of the child back to you after having acted as your child’s parent for several months or years. Frankly, you also need to consider the impact on your child if you were to remove your child from the only home the child has known for any length of time.

An option that would give your child a secure, permanent home, with loving, devoted parents, and the opportunity to realize her or his full potential while giving you the ability to focus your attention on the children you already have is to put the baby up for adoption, or more correctly, to make an adoption plan for your precious child by contacting adoption professionals like Adoption Attorneys Kirsh & Kirsh, P.C. (“Kirsh & Kirsh”), a local adoption agency, or national adoption agency.

We, at Kirsh & Kirsh — or the “Kirsh Boys,” as the adoption attorneys at Kirsh & Kirsh are sometimes called – Steve, and his brothers, Joel and Rob, and his son, Grant, pride ourselves on answering questions about adoption and explaining the process without pressure or judgment. Ultimately, a birth parent will have to decide if adoption is in their own best interests and the best interests of their child. We, at Kirsh & Kirsh, will not and cannot make that decision for anyone, but we can provide information and answers to questions – that way, you can make a well-informed decision.

POSITIVE ADOPTION LANGUAGE DISCLAIMER:  Please understand that these blog posts are written in a way to use language that people use when searching for help with their adoption plans.  Unfortunately, while all of us understand what positive adoption language means, most expectant moms that come to us at first do not understand what that means. The most common search term on the Internet for expectant moms is “how do I give up my baby for adoption”.  If we do not include those words in our blog posts, and instead put “how do I create an adoption plan for my baby” then our website will not show up in most expectant moms’ search results in Google.

Whether you live in Indiana or outside of Indiana, if you work with us, at Adoption Attorneys Kirsh & Kirsh, P.C. (“Kirsh & Kirsh”), in all likelihood, we would file the adoption in Indiana. Indiana Adoption Laws make adoption court records STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL. Additionally, Indiana Adoption Laws do not require you to involve anyone in the adoption whom you do not want to involve. That includes the unwed father of the child. If you are married, you may still not have to involve your husband, if he is not the biological father of the child.

Honestly, we, at Adoption Attorneys Kirsh & Kirsh, P.C. (“Kirsh & Kirsh”) don’t know. Sometimes children hate their parents for all kinds of “reasons,” both imagined and real. Much of how an adoptee feels about adoption depends on what the adoptive parents say to the adoptee about adoption. An adopted person who grows up in a supportive, loving home, whose adoptive parents recognize and honor the sacrificial love of the birth mother in making an adoption plan will likely NOT have bad feelings about his or her birth parents. However, some children raised by their biological parents hate their parents. Our feelings about our parents largely depend on the love and affection of the parents and the life our parents have provided us.

We, at Kirsh & Kirsh, require that the adoptive parents whom we represent complete a homestudy by an independent, adoption agency. As part of the homestudy process, any reputable national adoption agency or local adoption agency will mandate adoption education as part of the homestudy process, including how birth parents LOVE their children, and, because of that love, they make the hardest decision imaginable by proceeding with an adoption.  Additionally, the adoptive parents represented by Kirsh & Kirsh desperately want to adopt. In our experience, adoptive parents have faced too many hurdles in having children to ever take their children for granted and are fully committed to being the best parents they can possibly be and providing their children a world of opportunities that will allow their child to reach his or her full potential in a loving, supportive, happy home.

Most importantly, remember that she is the mother of the child and has the right to make parenting decisions. It is okay to offer guidance and advice, but you should not impose your judgment on her.

A good, non-judgmental way to begin a conversation about adoption with a pregnant friend is to ask her: “How do you feel about being pregnant?” If she expresses anything but excitement, she has then opened the door for you to suggest other options such as putting the child up for adoption or, more correctly, making an adoption plan for the child.

If she is excited about welcoming a child or another child, you might ask questions that cause her to judge for herself her readiness for a newborn. Ultimately, she will need to decide for herself that parenting the child may not serve the child’s best interests. Most people more willingly accept decisions they make on their own as opposed to those forced upon them by others. You could ask, questions like:

  1. At the end of the day, how much energy does she have now without the responsibility of a newborn?
  2. Does she feel that she spends enough one-on-one time with her child or children if she has another child or children?
  3. Who babysits her child or children and will look after the new baby when she goes out or to work and is that person willing to take responsibility for another child, particularly, a newborn?
  4. How likely is it that the father of the baby will help her raise the child?
  5. How much money does she have at the end of the month that she could use to provide for the new baby?
  6. What part of the cost of raising the child does she expect to receive from others and how certain is she of their continued and ongoing commitment?

Great question! The brief answer is that you “are driving the bus.” Tell us where you want to go, and we will help you figure out how to get there. You tell us what information you want about our adoption program and giving a baby up for adoption, or more correctly, making an adoption plan for your newborn baby or child or unborn infant, and we will explain how the process works. Also, you tell us how you want to receive the information – we will text, email, chat, Zoom, talk by telephone, or meet in person. We tailor each adoption plan to the individuals involved. Some birth parents are just “dipping their toes in the water” about adoption and are afraid to communicate with us in any way for fear that doing so will obligate them to put their baby up for adoption or mean that they will be forced to work with us. NOT TRUE! While we are really good at arranging adoptions, we are not so good at reading minds. We cannot tell you how we can help you unless you tell us what you want to know. No two ways about it — the decision to place a child for adoption will be the hardest decision you will ever make. The decision is hard no matter what, even when you are equipped with all of the information about the process. But it can become overwhelmingly difficult—perhaps even impossible—if you don’t have ANY information, or if you have incorrect information. If you contact us, we will respond. If you tell us what you want to know, we will tell you. We will NOT pressure you, try to talk you into adoption, or make you feel bad about yourself.

Contact a local adoption agency, national adoption agency, or an adoption law firm, like Adoption Attorneys Kirsh & Kirsh, P.C. (“Kirsh & Kirsh”). Although we, at Kirsh & Kirsh, cannot make the decision easy for you – nobody can make adoption an easy decision, we can simplify the process. Our 4 attorneys have over 90 years of combined experience arranging adoptions. We know that each birth mother has different needs and wants when considering putting their baby up for adoption, or more correctly, making an adoption plan. Some birth mothers want frequent contact from us and the prospective adoptive parents, our clients. Others want to be left alone. We will tailor your adoption experience to your needs rather than “standard policy” or as some local and national adoption agencies refer to as “Agency policy.” We will never make judgments about you, pressure you, or tell you what to do.

Take counseling, as an example: we believe that counseling gives birth mothers the tools to deal with their emotions and helps them focus on their reasons. But, we do not force or pressure birth parents to speak with a counselor, nor do we insist that counseling sessions take place in an office made to look like a cozy room. Some of the birth mothers with whom we work would prefer to “talk” to a counselor via chat, FaceTime, Zoom, text, or telephone.  Some don’t want to talk to a counselor, at all. That is fine. It’s their decision.

Our contact information is below.  We will answer your questions and provide you the information you seek, without cost or obligation on your part. In other words, talking to us costs you nothing nor does it mean you ever have to talk or text with us, again. We can assist you with an Indiana adoption no matter whether you live in Shelbyville or Knox, North Vernon or Madison, Indianapolis or Evansville, or any Indiana county or city in between.
