When talking with children, it is important to provide age-appropriate information and be honest. Obviously, how you explain it to a 5-year-old will differ from what you tell a 15-year-old. For a 5-year-old, as an example, you may want to say something like: “Mommy had a very difficult decision to make and did what she believed was best for you and the baby,” and not go into any more detail.  For the 15-year-old, you may want to explain the reasons that went into your decision.

However, you need to keep in my mind two very important points, regardless of the age of your children:

  1. You are the parent and the one responsible for caring for your children. With all parental decisions, it is up to YOU to do what is best for your children, even if your children disagree with you.
  2. Seek input from your children, if you want, but you cannot allow children to rule the household, especially with a decision of this magnitude.

POSITIVE ADOPTION LANGUAGE DISCLAIMER:  Please understand that these blog posts are written in a way to use language that people use when searching for help with their adoption plans.  Unfortunately, while all of us understand what positive adoption language means, most expectant moms that come to us at first do not understand what that means. The most common search term on the Internet for expectant moms is “how do I give up my baby for adoption”.  If we do not include those words in our blog posts, and instead put “how do I create an adoption plan for my baby” then our website will not show up in most expectant mom’s search results in Google.

No, you do not have to meet anyone from Adoption Attorneys Kirsh & Kirsh, in person, if you would like to learn about giving your baby up for adoption. We are flexible and will explain what’s involved in an adoption in any way you will find helpful – FaceTime, Zoom, text, chat, telephone, email, etc. We, at Kirsh & Kirsh, have found that mistaken beliefs and lack of information about adoption are two main reasons why more women do not consider giving up their babies for adoption or, more correctly, making an adoption plan for their newborns. We want to provide a woman facing untimely or unplanned pregnancy information in whatever way she is most comfortable receiving it so she can make a well-informed, knowing decision that best serves the baby’s best interests and her own needs.  Of course, we are also happy to meet in person in our office, her home, or anywhere in-between.

The “Kirsh Boys,” as the adoption attorneys at Kirsh & Kirsh, are sometimes called – Steve, and his brothers, Joel and Rob, and his son, Grant – pride themselves on answering questions about adoption and explaining the process without pressure or judgment. They cannot make adoption an easy choice, but they can make it less scary by removing some of the unknowns. Ultimately, a birth parent will have to decide if adoption is in their own best interests and the best interests of their child. We, at Kirsh & Kirsh, will not and cannot make that decision for anyone, but we can provide information and answers to questions.

It is not too early if you contact Adoption Attorneys Kirsh & Kirsh, P.C. (“Kirsh & Kirsh”). While some local adoption agencies and national adoption adoptions do not want to spend time with a newly pregnant, expectant mother or birth mother, we, at Kirsh & Kirsh, are happy to talk with you about adoption whenever you want, no matter how many weeks or months remain before your due date. In fact, we will “meet” in any manner you like – in person or by text, Zoom, telephone, or FaceTime. You tell us what is most comfortable for you. We do NOT take a “one size fits all” approach. If a woman has an unplanned pregnancy or untimely pregnancy and thinking about giving the baby up for adoption, or more correctly, making an adoption plan for the baby, we are happy to take the time to explain how adoption works and answer her questions whether 8 months and 6 days remain before the due date, has already given birth, or any time in between.

While it is true that nationally fewer families express interest in adopting Black babies than White babies, we at Adoption Attorneys Kirsh & Kirsh, P.C., have LOTS of carefully screened, loving, prospective adoptive parents who cannot wait to welcome an African-American baby into their hearts and homes. While some national adoption agencies and local adoption agencies may not have many waiting families, we have successfully recruited families from Indiana and all over the country, giving expectant mothers and birth mothers, who contact us, several, prospective adoptive families from whom to choose.
