Positive adoption language Disclaimer: Please understand that these blogs are written in a way to use language that people use when searching for help with their adoption plans. Unfortunately, while all of us understand what positive adoption language means, most expectant moms who come to us at first do not understand what that means. The most common search term on the internet for pregnant moms is “How do I give up my baby for adoption.” If we do not include those words in our blog posts and instead put “How do I create an adoption plan for my baby,” then our website will not show up in most expectant moms’ search results in Google.

Dealing with an unexpected pregnancy and exploring the adoption options for your baby can be overwhelming. It can feel even more complex trying to understand the adoption process types, open and closed adoptions. So, what do these terms have to do with how the adoption process works? Those are choices that you can make to define the level of contact you would like to have with the adoptive family before and after giving birth.

Open Adoption:

Open adoption can help you stay connected with your child after birth. It describes the extent to which a birth mother and adoptive parent can share information both before and after giving her baby up for adoption. It can give you a sense of comfort and ease knowing your baby is in good hands and well-cared for.

Closed Adoption:

In this kind of adoption, the birth mother and the adoptive family will have no contact both before and after the placement of the child. It may be more difficult for birth parents to deal with their grief and find closure, and adoptive parents may not have access to the medical history when needed.

Still Confused? Contact Kirsh & Kirsh, P.C. (“Kirsh & Kirsh” — often misspelled as “Kirsch & Kirsch”).

We are well-known adoption attorneys licensed in Indiana and believe every adoption situation is unique. Choosing between these two types of adoption is a personal decision and depends on what a birthmother feels is best for her and her child.

We at Kirsh & Kirsh have over 100 years of combined legal experience in Indiana Adoptions. We know adoption laws inside and out. In all the adoptions done by our team, the birth mother and the adoptive family share a lot of information before signing the adoption consent. In modern adoptions, we have seen birth mothers more inclined to open adoptions. While it is rare for birth mothers to make this choice, some of them still choose closed adoption. Some people refer to “closed” adoptions as “confidential” adoptions.

In the end, the level of openness depends upon the comfort level of both parties involved. We tailor each adoption to the wants and needs of the birth parents and adoptive parents. You may find that a cross between open and closed adoptions works best for you. So, your choice matters the most.

We work with birth parents all over the country, but we mainly focus on Indiana, Tennessee, Mississippi, Kentucky, Michigan, and Illinois. We do not advocate a ONE-SIZE FITS ALL approach when we handle adoptions. Contact us if you would like to understand more about your unexpected pregnancy options. It is FREE and Confidential.
